Can I type Traditional Chinese without installing a Chinese keyboard?
Yes. Open StrokeGrid's Pinyin tool in a browser, type tone-free Mandarin Pinyin with your English keyboard, and choose the Traditional Chinese words you mean. Build a sentence word by word, then use 複製 Copy to copy the Chinese output. This is a pronunciation-based input helper, not handwriting recognition or English-to-Chinese translation.
Worked example: 我想學習中文 (I want to study Chinese)
- Type wo and choose 我 (wǒ, I).
- Type xiang and choose 想 (xiǎng, want to).
- Type xuexi and choose 學習 (xué xí, study).
- Type zhongwen and choose 中文 (zhōng wén, Chinese).
The output should now read 我想學習中文. Check it before copying. The tool offers dictionary candidates, so do not assume the first suggestion is always the intended word or that a whole sentence will convert in one step.

StrokeGrid's key difference is immediate, learning-focused output: it accepts familiar Hanyu Pinyin and returns Traditional Chinese character and phrase suggestions in the browser. Microsoft Pinyin is packaged under the Windows Simplified Chinese IME. Windows also supports Traditional Chinese Hanyu Pinyin by changing the keyboard layout inside Microsoft Bopomofo settings.

How to type Traditional Chinese with Pinyin on Windows 11
Yes, Windows 11 can do this. The clearest documented route is to use Microsoft Bopomofo with its Hanyu Pinyin keyboard layout:
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Add your preferred Traditional Chinese language and make sure Microsoft Bopomofo is installed as a keyboard.
- Open Microsoft Bopomofo settings > Key assignment.
- Choose the Hanyu Pinyin keyboard layout.
- Type Pinyin with tones, or type it without tones and press Enter or Space to convert it to Traditional Chinese.

Type the Mandarin pronunciation
Click the input box labelled 輸入拼音 and type Pinyin with ordinary letters. You do not need to add tone marks. Spaces are optional for common words and short phrases.

Choose the character or word you mean
Pinyin sounds can match many Chinese characters. StrokeGrid shows common Traditional Chinese candidates first. Each result includes tone-marked Pinyin and, when available, a short English meaning. Tap the full word when it appears; otherwise choose one character and continue typing.
Build and copy a phrase or sentence
Your selected text appears in the 我寫的字 area. Add more words one at a time. Use 刪一個 to remove the last selection or 清空 to begin again.

Tips and troubleshooting
The word I want is not first
Many characters share the same sound. Check the tone-marked Pinyin and English meaning. For a complete syllable such as li, select 更多漢字 · More characters to reveal additional candidates. Adding the next syllable can narrow the word list. See the 曆 and 歷 example.
No suggestions appear
Check the Pinyin spelling and try one syllable at a time. The tool loads its character and word dictionaries from the internet, so it also needs an active connection.
The microphone does not start
Speech input works best in Chrome. Make sure microphone permission is allowed for StrokeGrid, then select the speak button again.
I chose the wrong character
Use 刪一個 to remove the most recent character or word. Your remaining sentence stays in place.
Traditional Chinese Pinyin questions
Can I hear a Traditional Chinese phrase and see its Pinyin?
Yes. Select a character or phrase in StrokeGrid's Pinyin tool. In 我寫的字 (your sentence), each selected item shows tone-marked Pinyin underneath. Click that item to hear it, or choose 讀出來 to hear the whole sentence. 複製 Copy copies only the Chinese text, without the Pinyin labels. Pronunciation is generated automatically, so check words with multiple readings in context.
Try nihao and choose 你好: the phrase appears with nǐ hǎo below it. Then enter xuexi and choose 學習 (xué xí). Click either phrase to review it separately. This is a selected-phrase practice tool, not a claim that every full sentence can be converted or pronounced correctly automatically.

How do I copy Traditional Chinese text after typing Pinyin?
Choose characters or phrases in StrokeGrid's Pinyin tool so they appear in 我寫的字 (your sentence). Select 複製 Copy to copy the entire Chinese output, then paste it into your document or message. The button copies the selected Chinese text, not the Pinyin input or the candidate list. If copying fails, select the Chinese text manually and check the pasted result: manual selection may also include the Pinyin labels underneath.
How do I find 曆 when typing li?
Type li and look for 曆 (lì) in the Traditional Chinese character suggestions. Select 更多漢字 · More characters if it is not in the first group. 曆 means calendar; 歷 is a different character used in words such as 歷史 (history). For a calendar word, try yangli for 陽曆 or yinli for 陰曆 and check the meaning before choosing.
How do I type Traditional Chinese with Pinyin?
Open the StrokeGrid Pinyin input tool, type Mandarin Pinyin without tone marks, and choose the matching Traditional Chinese character or phrase suggestion. You can then hear the result and open it in animated stroke-order practice.
Can Windows 11 type Traditional Chinese with Pinyin?

Does StrokeGrid suggest Traditional Chinese phrases or only single characters?
StrokeGrid suggests both individual Traditional Chinese characters and complete dictionary words or common phrases. Phrase suggestions are ranked ahead when the entered Pinyin matches.
Do I need Pinyin tone marks or tone numbers?
No. You can type plain letters without tones. The suggestions display tone-marked Pinyin so you can check the correct pronunciation.
Can I type a whole Chinese sentence at once?
The learning flow works best word by word. Select each word as it appears, then continue typing to build the sentence while checking pronunciation and meaning.
Can I practise the stroke order after typing?
Yes. Select the 筆順 ↗ link under an individual character or phrase in Your sentence to open just that item in stroke-order practice in a new tab. Clicking the word itself still plays its pronunciation. The StrokeGrid 練筆順 button opens the whole assembled text.
